Part of having an electric car is charging it. To do that, you have to have charging cables. You may have been looking around online for some electric vehicle charging cables and blown away at the price of something that you would think would be a lot cheaper. Most electric vehicle charging cables on the market right now are ranging anywhere from 200 to 700 US dollars. 

Why are electric vehicle cables so expensive? Electric vehicle cables are so expensive because of the need for costly materials in the creation of the cables. The charging cables have to use high quality materials that won’t simply burn up when faced with the high amount of amperage that is needed to charge electric cars. 

Electric cars can already come with a very high price tag so it is understandable that you wouldn’t want to be spending a bunch more money on accessories. Sadly, when it comes to charging cables for your electric vehicle you might just have to fork over a little more cash. In this article, we will be discussing why this is so and what makes these electric vehicle charging cables so expensive. 

Why EV Cables Cost So Much

When you look at a charging cable it seems simple, just the metal wire and then connectors, so why in the world would it cost so much? Not everyone has an extra 200 to 700 dollars to throw down on a charger for their electric car. 

On the other hand, a charging cable is something you need if you are planning on taking your electric car anywhere besides between your house and work each day. Without a charging cable, it is hard to charge your electric car. And without a charged electric car, it’s hard to drive your electric car. Let’s take a look at what makes these cables so much.

The biggest factor in the cost of charging cables is copper. It is the primary metal that is used to make these cables. Copper is a great conductor of electricity and can withstand relatively high temperatures. Therefore it is used in many electric components. The large demand for copper is why it is so expensive. 

Another factor that goes into the cost of the charging cables is the connector head. The connector heads are relatively expensive just because some of them have to be very specific and might even be unique to one model or make of a vehicle. This is a basic supply and demand example because the supply isn’t huge but there is a demand the companies that make these cables have to pay more for these connectors.

This leads us to our next part of why charging cables are expensive, the manufacturers. At the moment, electric cars are becoming more popular than a lot of people expected and there aren’t a lot of companies that have begun to manufacture these cables. 

Due to this lack of companies that are creating these charging cables, the companies can increase their prices because there isn’t as much competition on the market. These electric vehicle charging cables aren’t like phone chargers where there are literally 100s of companies producing them and creating competitive pricing with one another. 

Where To Find Cheaper Or Used EV Cables

There are cheaper options and even the option of finding used electric vehicle chargers that will be cheaper than buying a brand new charger. Amazon.com is a good option if you are looking for cheap electric vehicle charging cables. A little warning when buying these cheaper charging cables off sites like Amazon. Cheaper is not always better.

Saving money is always a good option, but when buying charging cables make sure you do your research and read reviews. It will be cheaper in the long run to buy cables that may be a little more expensive but efficiently charges your car and last for 10 years than buying a cheap cable that doesn’t charge as efficiently and may only last 5 years. 

For used cables, the best place to look would be websites like eBay and even Facebook Marketplace. In both of these places, you can usually count on finding something to buy. Another word of caution if you are going to buy used cables, make sure the cables work! Some people may sell cables that have bad connectors and make the cables absolutely useless. 

Make sure to be aware of the website’s return policy or go and see the item in person before buying it. Another thing to be careful about is that there are thieves that will actually steal charging cables to try and make a quick buck by selling them off on these sites. This means that you should make sure the seller is credible when buying off these sites.

Will EV Cables Get Cheaper In The Future?

Inevitably, electric vehicle charging cables will get cheaper in the future. As electric vehicles will become more prevalent, there will be more and more companies that begin to manufacture charging cables. As the supply goes up, the cost will come down. The increased competition in the charging cable market will push companies to decrease prices. 

Another reason that charging cables will most likely get cheaper in the future is that companies are always researching and finding new ways to efficiently make equipment. This increased efficiency in making cables will also help to decrease the price of the cables. 

How To Keep Your EV Cable From Getting Stolen

Now that you have bought your electric vehicle’s charging cable, what are some things you can do to keep it from being stolen and lose all of that money you just spent? In the past few years, there has been an increase in stolen charging cables, and public charging stations make easy targets for thieves. 

In most electric vehicle charging cables, there are locks that are built into the cables to help protect them while you are away from your car. Companies and manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve these locks and protect your cables. Even with these locks, thieves are still finding ways to steal the chargers, so what are your other options? 

One of the surest things you can do to ensure the safety of your charging cables is to use a padlock. Yep, that’s right, a good old-fashioned padlock. You can even use the padlock with a strong cable or chain and then connect that to either the charging station or another part of your car. Some cars, like the Nissan leaf, actually come with a little metal loop built onto the car for the exact purpose of attaching a padlock to your charging cable. 

Another thing you can do to deter unwanted thieves is to install dash cams on your car, front and back. Yes, this can’t physically stop a thief but they will definitely think twice about touching your car if they are smart enough to see the cameras. Most dash cams actually turn off once your car is parked but you can buy certain dash cams that are activated with motion sensors while your car is parked.

This last suggestion is something I found on the internet, but it is not something I would recommend doing. There are reportedly people who will park on their charging cables. So they get out of their car, put the cable in, leave enough slack that it doesn’t pull on the connectors, but then get back in your car and drive over the cable. 

These electric vehicle charging cables are strong and you could probably do this a few times if you really needed to. But this is going to damage your cables in the long run. Doing this also presents the risk of damaging not only your car but also the charging station. If it is a public charging station and you end up damaging it by doing this, that could add up to fees and costs that will sum up to even more than the cost of a new charging cable.
