Ford does not currently own its own charging stations around the country but instead has teamed up with different electric vehicle charging companies to create a large network that can be accessed through a subscription. Ford has been working with a company called Greenlots, as well as other charging companies, to build the largest charging network in North America. The process of charging has been streamlined, and finding/paying for chargers can all be done through the screen in your electric Ford or the FordPass app on your phone.
Are Ford Charging Stations Free? Ford has created a network of chargers that can be accessed through a subscription service. The subscription will be free for the first two years and then will need to be paid for to have access to the network. Having the subscription may decrease your cost of charging by up to 25% when compared to not having the subscription.
Ford claims that they have streamlined charging electric vehicles through the making of their Blue Oval Charging Network. Many people have questioned Ford on their price for the subscription and the need for a large charging network. Ford is trying to make long-distance traveling possible with their network and although it is not free, it does allow for ways to charge your vehicle and plan out your routes while making sure your car stays at an acceptable charge for the whole trip. Subscription services are not new to the charging world and having to pay for charging even when having a subscription is not new either, Ford has simply joined the game with a network bigger than everyone else’s.
Are Ford Charging Stations Free?
The charging stations that you are given access to from their subscription are not owned by Ford but are part of a network that Ford has brought together. The fast chargers that are within the network will not be free and you will have to pay if you want to use them. However, some level 2 chargers may be free but that will depend on the time and place. Ford is trying to create access to chargers and although they are not free they do allow longer trips to be taken with electric vehicles. Their system has not been fully implemented and seems like it will take place around the time that the Ford Lightning is going to be released.
With the creation of Ford’s Blue Oval Charging Network, there have been a lot of mixed opinions. About 80% of electric vehicle charging occurs at home, this means that most of the time, electric vehicle chargers are only used in emergencies or if someone is planning a long-distance trip. The current rumored price of a single $50 payment for a year’s worth of subscription is also something that not too many people are happy with. Electrify America has a similar subscription service that is about $4 a month, meaning you would only have to pay $48 for a whole year.
Why many people are not happy with Ford’s network is because you have to pay that one price instead of a monthly payment that they can cancel anytime, like Electrify America’s monthly subscription. They are also not too happy because people are not going to be consistently charging at public chargers all the time, so they rather pay for a month at a time and if there is a month when they don’t need the subscription, they don’t have to pay for it.
Are There Any Charging Subscription Plans For Purchase?
Ford has made sure that your vehicle can stay charged nearly everywhere you go. They have created the largest networks of public chargers in North America. Access to chargers is essential when it comes to having an electric vehicle and luckily with Ford, this worry has been lessened with the creation of their network. To use this network you do have to have a subscription and at this time the cost of that subscription is unknown, but there have been rumors that it may be a $50 payment for one year of membership.
If you buy a new electric vehicle from Ford, you currently get access to Blue Oval Charging Network through FordPass. You have access to this network for two years for free but once your two years are up, then a subscription is required to use this network. You will still have to pay for plugging in your vehicle and the electricity that it uses. However, some level 2 chargers may be free depending on where you live and other factors such as that. As mentioned before, the subscription may be a yearly payment of $50 for access to their network, this does not include charging but may include a discount.
There are also other charging subscriptions such as Electrify America, EVCS, and Charge Point that have subscription services that give you certain benefits when it comes to charging your electric vehicle. All of them have a network of charging stations that you will be granted access to once you purchase their subscription.
Electrify America works by allowing you to purchase their subscription service and then you get a discount off of their chargers as well as a few other benefits. EVCS works by making a monthly payment of about $50 but you have unlimited access to their chargers and don’t have to pay when you use them. It is probably best to research the chargers that are in your area and if you want to purchase a subscription, then make sure there are plenty close to you and it is the one that fits your individual schedule and life the best.
